HELP Overview The HP54700 Series Oscilloscopes are the most accurate single shot oscilloscopes in the HP family of digitising oscilloscopes. Their modular design makes it possible to configure a system that is best suited to the current application. This is possible through boards, sotware updates and plug-ins. The plug-ins are for analog signal conditioning, which scale the input signal , set the bandwidth of the system and allow the user to choose the input coupling and impedence. The ouput is an analog signal and trigger that is applied to the acquisition board on the mainframe and the trigger board respectively. A maximum of 4 input channels for the HP54720 and 2 channels for the HP54710 are available. The oscilloscope captures data in two modes - * Real-Time Sampling Mode - To view signals that occur either once or infrequently. It uses a high-sample rate and hence has a high single-shot bandwidth. * Equivalent-Time Sampling Mode - To view signals that are repetitive. It uses data acquired from repetitive triggers which increases the effective sample rate and also the system bandwidth. This mode also gives a higher vertical resolution. END HELP HELP Key Specifications * 4 GSa/s sampling rate * 1 GHz real-time bandwidth at probe tip * 1-3 GHz equivalent - time bandwidth at probe tip * 8-bit vertical resolution * 0.007%+30 ps time interval measurement accuracy * 6 ps RMS jitter * 32-K samples memory depth * 0.6pF probe tip capacitance END HELP HELP Key Features For Complex Applications * User-selectable digital waveform reconstruction * User-selectable sample rate and memory depth * A huge range of automatic measurements with user -definable parameters * Statistics on continuously updated automatic measurements * Waveform math functions including integration , differntiation and FFT. * No hardware adjustments * Built-in software calibration * Best-accuracy calibration * Horizontal and vertical waveform magnification * Time base window * Advanced logic triggering, including glitch capture * Built-in MS-DOS compatible 3.5 inch floppy disk drive * Unlimited waveform/setup storage to disk * IEEE 488.2 HPIB programming language * High throughput: upto 177 waveforms/ second to display , 80 waveforms/second over HPIB * High resolution color monitor * Color, grey- scale, variable persistance * High-resolution draw mode * Transfer waveforms to PC for storage, editing or presentations using TIFF and PCX formats * Color hardcopy output to HP Paintjet, HP LaserJet and HP ThinkJet printers * Spool upto four printouts * Time/Date stamp * Nonvolatile waveform memory * Electrically programmable flash-ROM for easy, fast firmware update * Online help END HELP HELP About the Driver This driver supports both the mainframes HP54710 and HP54720 of the HP547x0 series and currently supports the following plug- ins- *HP54711 - Attenuator plug-in This plug-in is suitable for equivalent- time sampling and has external triggering. *HP54712 - Amplifier plug-in This plug-in is also for equivalent-time sampling or real-time sampling if the signal is within 500 MHz. *HP54713 - Amplifier plug-in This is mainly for real-time sampling when the signal falls within 500MHz. *HP54721 - Amplifier plug-in This is also suited for real-time sampling where a bandwidth of 1.1 GHz is required and also supports external trggering. *HP54722 - This doubles the sampling rate to 8 GSa/s, and has two external built-in triggers. The plug-ins do not have a fixed slot and the driver takes care of recognising which slot contains which plug-in, during initialisation. CAUTION : If any changes are made after this, like taking out a plug-in or interchanging them, the driver has to be RESET for it to behave properly. END HELP HELP Using the Panel The instrument functionality has been grouped into following panels. * Main Panel * Timebase Panel * Channel Panel * Trigger Panel * Trigger N Panel * Wfm Math Panel * Measure Panel * Measure DEF Panel * Limit Test Panel * Markers Panel * ACQ Panel * Waveform Panel * FFT Panel * Display Panel * W/F Memory Panel * MISC Panel * Status Panel * About Panel The 'Reset' button resets the instrument to default conditions by sending a "*RST" command. The left half panel displays the waveform data in addition to providing controls for on/off switches. A click on the XY display will acquire the waveform data (trace) (by sending a ":WAV:DATA?" command) for each active channel. It will not activate a fresh digitize operation. The 'Digitize' button, triggers a fresh digitization of the active channel(s), waits until the oscilloscope completes the sweep, and updates the waveform buffers. The Trigger panel too provides a control for digitizing. The 'Digitize (No wait)' button in the Trigger panel sends the "DIGITIZE" command for the active channel(s) but does not wait for the instrument to complete the sweep nor does it update the waveform buffers. The 'Single' button causes the instrument to make a single acquisition when the next trigger event occurs but does not wait for the aquisition to complete nor does it update the waveform buffers. The 'Stop' button causes the instrument to stop acquiring data for the active display. Run or Single must be used to restart the acquis- ition. The Run button places the instrument in the running state, in which waveforms are acquired according to the current settings. There is a switch (toggle) for each of the four channels which controls the status (Off/On) of the corressponding channel and the trace. When a channel is turned ON, the corresponding waveform data (trace) is acquired.(without a fresh digitize). Refer to help on Waveform components for details on waveform data buffers and related components. NOTE : A Step size has been given to all continuous components for the ease of operations. The size has been simultaed as far as possible to match the steps on the instrument. In those cases where this was not possible, a minimum value has been given , so that user has no difficulty in entering the values using the mouse in HPITG2. END HELP HELP Waveform Components All waveform data for the channels is stored in the following components. WF_CH1 RARRAY 6144 channel 1 data WF_CH2 RARRAY 6144 channel 2 data WF_CH3 RARRAY 6144 channel 3 data WF_CH4 RARRAY 6144 channel 4 data The component 'WF_SIZE' gives the actual number of points in the waveform i.e. size of each trace and is obtained before getting the actual waveform data by sending the :WAV:PRE? query. The instrument has a pixel memory into which several waveforms can be stored , which is volatile. This memory is part of the video RAM and hence no measurements can be made on this data. The entire data is stored in the following buffer RASTER IARRAY 16383 buffer for PMEM1 The driver supports Merge,Download,Upload and Erase operations for the pixel memory PMEM1. The instrument has also got four waveform memories which are nonvolatile. Parametric measurements are possible on this waveform memory and they can also be used as function operands. The components that store this are WF_WM1 RARRAY 6144 memory 1 data WF_WM2 RARRAY 6144 memory 2 data WF_WM3 RARRAY 6144 memory 3 data WF_WM4 RARRAY 6144 memory 4 data The function components are WF_FUNC1 RARRAY 6144 function 1 data WF_FUNC2 RARRAY 6144 function 2 data END HELP HELP Main Panel This panel provides controls for Timebase(in s/div) and the Sweep mode. The Sensitivity (in V/div) and Probe Attenuation for each of the channels are queried at the time of RESET and are displayed. These controls are also available in the respective (Timebase and Channel) panel. A '*' is displayed if the plug-in slot is empty in the livemode ( instrument connected) or if the plug-in memory has been corrupted. END HELP HELP Timebase Panel This panel has controls for setting up the Timebase. (Timebase sensitivity i.e. Sweep Speed (in s/div), Timebase Delay, Sweep Mode, Timebase Reference. Using this the waveform can be moved across the display , or can be zoomed in or out. The driver also supports the windowing feature of the oscilloscope through which a more detailed or high resolution analysis can be performed on the signal. END HELP HELP Channel Panel This panel allows the user to set up the channel (Y-axis) parameters, Probe attenuation, Vertical sensitivity, and Vertical offset, independently for each channel. It is also possible to set the unit of measure that has to be appended to the channel scale and offset and also the amount of gain and offset that have to be compensated for the actual characteristics of the probe as compared to its ideal charactristics. To compensate for differences in probe lengths , or to compare two waveforms with a timing difference skew can be set. Other controls which are plug-in dependent are also allowed if the setting is valid for that plug-in ( BW filter, Input sensitivity and calibration output ). Vertical sensitivity(SENS) for channels is set in units/div . The vertical offset is set in units selected. The controls for status of each channel (VIEW/BLANK) are provided in the left half panel.(the 'CH1','CH2','CH3' and 'CH4' toggles). Buttons to save the current channel into a waveform memory ( which can be used later on ) are provided. END HELP HELP Trigger Panel The driver supports all the trigger modes that are available in the oscilloscope. Though most commands are common to all the trigger modes , to be specific, it is first necessary to select the mode and then send the command. The modes that are alowed are - * Edge - the controls that are required here are the trigger source, level and slope * Glitch - here again the source, level , polarity and the width of the pulse can be controlled. The glitch trigger can be set to trigger when the pulse width is less than or more than a specified amount of time. * Pattern- this is an advanced logic triggering where it is possible to set the source levels and conditions , and the pattern that would trigger the oscilloscope, when/after/for a certain duration, a particular sequence occurs. * State - This is similar to the pattern except that one channel is a clock edge and the other three define the pattern. *Delay Time - Here the arming and trigger source , levels and slopes and the delay time can be set. *Delay Event - Along with the arming and trigger, the event source, level and polarity are programmable. Those controls that are not specific to a mode are available in the first panel. They are the holdoff time and hysterisis ( threshold band ). There is a 'Digitize (No wait)' button available in this panel. This button is different to the one available in the left half panel. In this case, after sending the the driver does not wait for the instrument to complete the sweep nor does it update the channel buffers. END HELP HELP Trigger N Panel This panel has controls for those plug-ins with external triggering capabilities - the HP54711 and the HP54721 plug-ins - to set the probe attenuation factor and the filter. END HELP HELP Wfm Math Panel This panel has controls for Waveform Math Function definition, display, vertical and horizontal sensitivity, offset and tracking. The top most control selects the Function (1 or 2). The second row of controls allows the Function parameters to be specified. The Function definition (as specified by the second row of controls) to the instrument. It is also possible to store the function into one of the four waveform memories. Note that this will overwrite the exiting memory. END HELP HELP Measure Panel This panel can be used to make Voltage,Time and FFT parametric measurements on the waveform data. There is a panel each for Voltage,Time and FFT measurement selection and display apart from the main measurement panel. The 'MEAS Source' control in the main measurement panel selects the channel on which the measurements are made. This control is same as the source 'X1Y1 SRC' control in the Markers panels. The driver allows two modes of measurement- a single shot measurement or a continuous mode measurement. In the latter case the measurements are automatically updated if the Automatic Update of HPITG is turned on. If this is turned off, the user should click on the 'Get CONT Results' after selecting upto four different measurements. If there is any error during selection of measurements, it is advisable to click on the `Scratch Measurements` button to get proper results. The different types of measurements have been classified under * Voltage measurements * Time measurements * FFT measurements It should be noted that none of the controls in this panel trigger a fresh digitize operation. The measurements are made on the available waveform data. NOTE : While it is possible through the instrument front panel to select the same measurement for more than one channel, this is not possible in the driver due to restriction in panel placements, and the driver only shows the measurement for the last selected source for that measurement ( this overwrites the measurement for the previos source ). NOTE : The 'Get Cont Results' will fetch the results only when the Limit Testing is turned off , or else it will prompt the user to do so. NOTE : If the continuous mode is selected then each measurement also updates the markers ,due to which the speed of operations is slowed down considerably. This could be avoided by turning 'OFF' the marker mode. NOTE: The data from the continuous mode are available for VEE output pins by components Meas_Stat_Curr1/2/3/4 -- current result Meas_Stat_Min1/2/3/4 -- Minimum Meas_Stat_Max1/2/3/4 -- Maximum Meas_Stat_Mean1/2/3/4 -- Mean Meas_Stat_SDev1/2/3/4 -- Standard Deviation Meas_Stat_Size1/2/3/4 -- Sample Size If Meas_Statistics is OFF, then only Meas_Stat_Curr1/2/3/4 are available. If Meas_Statistics is ON, then all statistics are available for output pins, regardless of the MEAS_MEAS_TYPE selection. The MEAS_MEAS_ TYPE selection only controls which statistic will be displayed on this driver panel. Components "1" are for the first parameter that you have selected, "2" for the second, etc.. END HELP HELP Measure DEF Panel This panel is used to set the measurement points where automatic measurements are made. The user has the option of selecting either the standard IEEE measurement points or customizing the measurements by defining his own measurement points. The first panel has buttons for selecting Delta, Threshold or Topbase definitions and on clicking the required button, the driver takes you to the appropriate measurement defi- nition menu. If custom measurement definitions are being set, the user after selection should click on the appropriate selectiing Upper, Middle and Lower Threshold levels , the user should click on the 'Set Threshold Defs' to send the values to the instrument. END HELP HELP Limit Test Panel The driver supports the limit test features of the HP54720 oscilloscope. This automatically compares the measurement results with the pass or fail limits, and can track upto four measure- ments. This panel has controls for setting the fail conditions, action to take when a measurement cannot be made , and the terminating condition for the test. The upper and lower limits can be set for each measurement, and on clicking the 'Get Limit Results' button the limit test results are obtained , at the end of the limit testing when the flag is set in the Limit Test Register. The right hand top displays the measurement for which the results are displayed at the bottom. To view the other measurement results, click on the number button next to the measurement display and select the required measurement for viewing. END HELP HELP Markers Panel The driver supports all the three marker modes that are available in the instrument - * Measurement marker * Manual marker * Waveform marker Measurement markers are displayed when any measurements are being made and is the default marker mode that is selected. The markers are placed at the last measurement that is selected. The readout on the instrument can be turned on or off. Waveform markers track the waveform data and are useful in making delay measurements. The driver uses two different colors to distinguish between the + marker ( Safety Red ) and the * marker ( Razor Blue ) . Manual markers are used for custom measurements and the user can position the marker anywhere on the display. The markers can be moved into postion by manually entering the position or by clicking on the '>>' or '<<' buttons. The corresponding delta value is displayed or can be queried. END HELP HELP ACQ Panel The oscilloscope can be set to acquire data in a user-defined way by setting the sampling mode, sampling rate, record length, number of averages, etc. The sampling mode is determined by the type of signal under measurement. For signals that are repetitive equivalent mode is selected. In this mode it is possible to turn ON or OFF the averaging and also set the number of averages. The completion criteria can also be set. For signals that are infrequent ,the real mode is selected. In this mode the user has the option of setting the sampling rate to suit the bandwidth of the signal and also turning on or off the interpolate for display purposes. To remove high frequency noise from the signal the digital BW Limit can be turned on. END HELP HELP Waveform Panel This panel displays the actual details of the waveform that was captured like the waveform type , minimum hits in all the time buckets, percentage of time buckets that are complete and the number of waveform points that are on display. END HELP HELP FFT Panel In this panel FFT can be performed on the selected source . Scaling and windowing on this can also be performed. The span and frequency resolution can also be set through the driver. The FFT waveform can also be stored into any of the four waveform memories in the instrument. END HELP HELP Display Panel This panel provides controls for setting up the display (similar to the Display menu on the instrument.) and for pixel memory operations. Persistance determines how long a data point is kept on display before the oscilloscope erases it from display. This can be set to minimum, infinite or a user-defined value. The display on the instrument ( note , only the instrument ) can be split to show either two graphs or one. The waveform draw mode can be set to fast, connect dots or high resolution. This panel also has controls for Pixel Memory operations. The driver supports Merge,Download,Upload and Erase operations for only the pixel memory PMEM1. The 'Merge' buttons store the contents of the active display into the specified pixel memory in the instrument by sending the corresponding "MERGE" command. The 'Upload' buttons transfer the specified pixel memory data from the instrument to a corressponding buffer in the driver ('RASTER' for PMEM1 ) The 'Download' buttons do the reverse i.e. transfer the specified pixel memory buffer from the driver to the corresponding pixel memory in the instrument. The 'Erase' buttons erase the specified pixel memory in the instrument by sending a "ERASE" command and invalidate the corresponding pixel buffer in the driver. END HELP HELP W/F Memory Panel This panel allows the user to turn on or off the stored waveform memory. The storing of the channels, functions or fft display would have been already effected in the corresponding panels , and the waveform memory would be overwritten by the latest one that was stored. Also as it has the memory scaling information , this waveform data can be used for both measurements and as function operands. The scaling of a waveform memory can be done only when the waveform memory is turned on and that memory is selected for scaling ( a button at the bottom of the screen ). The driver also supports both the X and Y axis scaling and offset controls . END HELP HELP MISC Panel END HELP HELP Status Panel This panel provides controls for querying the Status Byte(*STB?), Error Number(:SYST:ERR?), Event Register(*ESR?) and Operation complete (*OPC?). The 'Self Test' control sends a "*TST?" command , which initiates a self test of the instrument and displays a "PASS" if success(0) is returned or a "FAIL" if failure(1) is returned. The 'OPC' and 'WAI' buttons send the "*OPC" and "*WAI" command respectively and the allow the user to set and query the respective event registers. (*ESE and *SRE).
